a rare privilege

We occasionally see a flash of brown and yellow through the trees and hedges in the garden as a sparrowhawk swoops down on a sparrow or goldfinch but never before have I seen one sat so close to the house, posing for a photograph, and in the pouring rain.

Beautiful birds but a species we haven't seen over here. Buzzards galore but no sparrowhawks.

we see them flying around from time to time, usually being mobbed. Last year I saw martins mobbing one.

Last week I noticed the lack of twittering from the resident sparrows, who normally dart in and out of the hedge opposite my kitchen. Absolute silence outside! Then I spied a Sparrowhawk perched atop the fence, peering along the length of the hedge. Managed to grab a couple of photos but then waved him away so that 'my' sparrows could emerge once more from the thickness of the hedge.
