the house that Sally built
It was Stoke Climsland Flower Show on Saturday and once again we were blessed with fine weather (it feels like every day this year has been fine). Every one is very creative round here. Especially with potatoes.

deer view
deer in meadows at Upper Downgate, and, looking the other way, the view of our villages, Stoke Climsland and Venterdon, church and chapel, before the momentous events of 14 June 2014. The white structure in the distance is yet another wind turbine, one of many which are becoming more and more intrusive in this landscape.

Rowden lane
Rowden lane is marked by the red dashes, and runs from the crossroads at the top of Pound Lane (the entrance is next to the field where it is proposed to site the chicken factory) in a north easterly direction to the road that runs between Pempwell and Goosewell. The brown spot on the path marks approximately where the picture of bluebells was taken. The map indicates that the original route continues across the road towards Trecombe, and is funnel shaped which is probably related to its suggested use as a cattle drove.Only the path between the roads is now a bridal path.

Bal maidens
images from A Hole in the Ground, an exhibition (in aid of NSPCC) in our parish hall of arts and crafts inspired by mining in the Tamar valley and a reflection of the harsh life of young men and women who worked in the mines locally.

the mysteries of Judgement
at Stoke Climsland Flower Show 2013, spared by the rain, blessed by a huge entry and a happy gathering. It's not the winning but the eating that matters.

sky church
On foggy nights the lighting on our church casts a strange palimpsest of the steeple in the sky. Royal Navy ships often carry vicars to sea. One of the fonder nicknames given to them is sky pilots. Perhaps this is where they work.

unseen view
Our village glimpsed through the few trees left from the great larch cull along the side of the road running into the village. The flash of orange is caused by the morning sun shining on the ends of the larch logs.

larchmaggedon
This is a view I never wanted to see. Our village was surrounded by conifer plantations and mixed deciduous woods. Suddenly we have a new view of the village through the woods especially at night driving home. This is because the larch trees have been cut down. They are the host of a fungus, phytophthorum ramorum (see link), that has suddenly become rampant and is killing trees. It is a threat to our native oak, and the removal of larch is part of a scorched earth policy to prevent its spread. Unfortunately we are also at the beginning of an epidemic of fungal disease in our ash trees. We have lost 90% of all our elms, and there are threats to horse chestnuts and other trees (see link). Perhaps mother Earth is trying to shrug us off, or maybe we should stop importing all foreign plant species just to make money.

top of the hill
entrance to our village this afternoon, (with traffic sign impedimenta and bins removed, if only planning and highway law were so simple). See link for same view from an earlier page from this blog with different flowers and more information.

Daffodils in November
It is hard to believe that these daffodils are so far ahead. Everything is out of kilter. Maybe it is a floral tribute to the sinking of the SS Europa after she hit a transatlantic debt mountain.

more autumn colour 4
Stoke Climsland from the south west looking unusually picturesque for the time of year. And below our lovely scented climbing rose has decided to flower again
more autumn colour 3
Apleasant but fairly dull picture, until you see the little black spot towards the bottom of the tree trunk on the left, which is a very late flying red admiral sunning itself
and adding to this picture of unseasonal warmth there was also a late comma out and about.
