Spring bugs

It has been warm, almost Spring-like today. This is the hawthorn shield bug which overwinters as an adult, and has been fooled by the mild weatherinto waking up two months early, although it was quite dozy. I wonder why it earned its scientific name (see link) ?

Looks like an art nouveau brooch.

Glad to see the OHG is enjoying a spring like day! We have experienced a polar vortex snow storm on our island, all schools cancelled, homemade bread in the oven and snow angels on the front lawn....what could be better? Enjoy the weather! Tara

I had a shield bug on a plant in my bathroom recently. Normally I would place any cteatures oitside, but it was so cold that I didn't have the heart to do it. It is now quietly munching on my miniature palm . . . .
